About the Project
Adolescent Mental Health & Menstrual Hygiene Initiative
Target Areas: Nawada, Nalanda, Saharsa (Bihar) & Koderma (Jharkhand)
The Empower Her Project is a community-based initiative dedicated to improving the mental health, emotional well-being, and menstrual hygiene of adolescent girls aged 10–19 years in the districts of Nawada, Nalanda, Saharsa, and Koderma. The project aims to create a safe, informed, and supportive environment where girls can confidently navigate adolescence, stay healthy, continue their education, and realize their full potential.
Through school-based and community outreach programs, the initiative provides awareness sessions on mental health, stress management, emotional resilience, menstrual health, nutrition, personal hygiene, life skills, gender equality, and reproductive health. The project also promotes early identification of emotional distress, encourages help-seeking behavior, and works to eliminate the stigma associated with mental health and menstruation. Evidence from similar adolescent-focused programs shows that combining life-skills education, hygiene awareness, and community engagement can improve girls' confidence, school participation, and overall well-being.
Key interventions include:
Mental health awareness and psychosocial support sessions.
Menstrual hygiene education and distribution of hygiene kits.
Life skills, leadership, and self-confidence development.
Peer support groups and adolescent clubs.
Parent, teacher, and community sensitization workshops.
Training of frontline workers and school staff on adolescent well-being.
Referral support for girls requiring professional counseling or healthcare services.
The project adopts a holistic approach by engaging adolescents, families, schools, healthcare providers, and local communities to build an enabling ecosystem that supports girls' physical, emotional, and social development. By addressing both mental health and menstrual hygiene, Empower Her seeks to reduce school absenteeism, improve self-esteem, strengthen resilience, and empower adolescent girls to become healthy, confident, and active contributors to their communities.
